Security guards fired live bullets in the air to arrest a suspect in connection with a foiled robbery at Centenary Bank, Masaka.

The attempted Friday morning robbery started when three people entered the Centenary Bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) booth located along Edward Avenue in Masaka town and started vandalizing it in an attempt to extract money.

The three, two men and one woman raised the suspicions of the security guards who found it strange that they had entered the booth at the same time.  This prompted the guards to approach the booth for closer inspection.

A security guard who refused to identify himself because he is not allowed to speak to the press explained that when they approached the ATM, they found the suspects fidgeting and attempting to dismantle it. He said that as soon as the bungling robbers realised that they had been detected, they stormed out of the ATM and run, forcing him to fire in the air to stop them from running.

After the shootout, one female suspect identified as Anita Natukunda, who claimed to be a resident of Nateete in Kampala was arrested.

Noah Sserunjogi, the southern region Police Spokesperson, revealed that Police recovered six ATM cards belonging to Centenary and Stanbic Bank. They also found on her person a cheque book leaflet and 270,000 shillings she had withdrawn.

Sserunjogi confirmed that Natukunda is being held at Masaka Central Police station as investigations proceed and the hunt for her two accomplices continues.  The suspect faces fraud charges.

However, Anita Natukunda denied involvement in the attempted robbery. She claimed that she was forced to run for her life when the security guard fired live bullets in the air. She was also scared that the security guard might want to rob her of her money.

Joseph Mubiru, the Centenary Bank Masaka branch manager, declined to comment on the matter but referred URN reporter to Centenary Headquarter in Kampala.

On Wednesday, another suspect Godfrey Muwuluzi was arrested at the same bank attempting to withdraw money from an account that belongs to another customer. Muwuluzi is still detained at Masaka Central Police.

Early this week, three students of Bwanda Secondary School in Kalungu district were conned of school fees amounting to 500,000 shillings at Centenary Bank.
