Gunfire in Bundibugyo as Police Battles NRM Suppporters

Police in Bundibugyo has used live bullets to disperse NRM party supporters who had turned rowdy and paraded along the Bundibugyo highway on Saturday. The supporters were demanding the declaration of NRM party election results, from polls held on Friday.

The locals who had participated in the NRM primary elections were demanding to get all sub-county results from the presiding officers to enable them to understand the results between the Bughendera county incumbent Christopher Kibanzanga and his rival Acrobert Kiiza Moses.

Although the polling officials read out provisional results for those contesting for the women and Bwamba county parliamentary seats. There was no official declaration of the winners.  The delay caused anxiety among the voters and many took to the streets demanding a declaration or re-election in the entire district. 

John  Mugisa, an NRM party member wondered why it has taken the district party office two days to tally results from only 27 sub-counties, suspecting that there could be foul play to change the outcome of the polls.

Police responded with live bullets to quell the locals who had become rowdy as they sang songs of victory for candidates of their choice. Bundibugyo District Police Commander Swaibu Taban said the police had to respond early enough to avert any possible violence. 

Bundibugyo District NRM party registrar, Robert Kifunga Aguma told URN on Saturday afternoon that they have been slow to announce winners after noticing varying figures on the declaration forms.
