Police in the Albertine region are searching for unknown gunmen who robbed a mobile money agent of shillings 25 million along the Butole-Hohwa road in Kikuube on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when Richard Muhangi, who was traveling on a Bajaj motorcycle, was ambushed by the assailants. The gunmen reportedly pointed their weapons at him and demanded that he hand over the money he was carrying.
Fearing for his life, Muhangi complied and gave them a bag containing the cash. In addition to the money, the thugs made off with three smartphones and several SIM cards. Muhangi described the assailants as two armed men dressed in clothes resembling army camouflage and with their heads covered. He said the robbers trailed him on a motorcycle, driving at high speed, before blocking him and carrying out the robbery.
After the attack, Muhangi reported the incident to Kikuube Central Police Station. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed the robbery and stated that a team of flying squad detectives has been dispatched to the area to track down the suspects. Hakiza added that the assailants may have been monitoring the victim’s movements for some time.
The robbery is part of a disturbing trend of armed attacks on the business community in Kikuube and the broader Bunyoro region. In January 2024, armed thugs raided Wairagaza Trading Center in Kyangwali Sub-County, Kikuube, and robbed a businesswoman of shillings 3 million. The assailants, who also threatened the woman at gunpoint, escaped with the money and have not yet been apprehended.
