Heavy Rains Claim Life, Ravage Crops and Household Property in Lamwo

Morris Alana Lanek, the Pabwoch Village LCI Chairperson, says that the evening downpour that was accompanied by heavy wind ravaged immeasurable acres of maize, soybeans, simsim, beans, sweet potatoes and vegetables.

A heavy storm has claimed the life of one person, damaged crops and household property in Lagwel parish, Padibe West Sub County in Lamwo district. The deceased has been identified as Jibirani Odongo, a resident of Pabwoch village and retired civil servant.

Morris Alana Lanek, the Pabwoch Village LCI Chairperson, says that the evening downpour that was accompanied by heavy wind ravaged immeasurable acres of maize, soybeans, simsim, beans, sweet potatoes and vegetables.

Calisto Cyrus Ongaya, the Lagwel parish LC II Chairperson and son to the deceased, says the downpour that that started at around 9 pm blew off the rooftop of the house where his father was resting forcing the walls to collapse. Ongaya says that residents tried to dig through the debris to save the old man in vain.   

According to Ongaya, the hailstorm affected Nyamaloo, Pawoch, Pabwoch West, Pawoch North and Lomura five villages in Lagwel parish where crops and household property worth millions of Shillings was ravaged.  Repa Okello, the Pabwoch West Village LCI Chairperson, says that apart from devastating crops and killing some livestock and poultry, the disaster also ravaged a three-roomed house belonging to Joshua Opwonya.

Grace Lalam Ocan, one of the affected farmers in Pabwoch North village says that the incident has inflicted huge losses on them, saying that they could face a major food crisis. She now wants the government to come to their rescue by supporting the victims by providing fast-maturing seeds to the affected communities
