Heavy rains have destroyed the Kahungabunyonyi-Kyabukonkoni road in West Division, Fort Portal Municipality.

The road has been in poor state but the heavy rains that have been experienced in the past days have made the road impassable.

According to residents, despite raising the matter to the municipal leadership, they have not been assisted.

When URN reporter visited the damaged road, it was found that the drainage system has been blocked by silt and overgrown grass. Also, the middle of the road is muddy and vehicles can hardly pass.

The damaged road leads to two learning institutions, Kahungabunyonyi Primary School and FINS Medical University.

On Monday, residents demonstrated and planted bananas in the middle of the road and blocked it with tree logs to show their discontent. The residents also argue that the municipal council worsened the state of the road when they poured soil in it instead of the recommended gravel.

Maxwell Mugume, a resident in the area says that they have now resorted to using longer routes in order to access Fort Portal town.
