Traffic was paralysed along Mugabi Street in Kahoora Division in Hoima Municipality this morning following a demonstration by angry residents over uncollected garbage. The angry residents blocked the road and lit fire using old tires to express their dissatisfaction with the failure by the municipality to collect and dispose the waste.

They called for the immediate resignation of the town clerk, Division and municipal officials in the failure of their responsibility. Ester Komujune operates a restaurant along Mugabi Street. He accuses the municipality for failing to remove garbage from the area for the last months, which has chased away her customers.

According to Komujune, Hoima Municipality is fast becoming one of the dirtiest towns in the country yet the municipal officials charge them a monthly garbage collection fees.

Sadick Mackdard, a produce dealer says Mugabi street has become one of the Garbage dumping sites in the town. He accuses both the municipal and Kahoora division Authorities of abandoning heaps of garbage along the street, a thing that has compromised sanitation.

He says if the garbage collection trucks are non-functional as alleged by the Municipal authorities, they should hire private trucks to collect the garbage. Mackdard says the municipal officials waste a lot of money touring other towns across the country to see how they manage garbage collection, but never implement anything from their study tours.

Ahamad Mugisa, the Kahoora Division Town clerk, says most of the garbage collection trucks have broken down, which has affected their operations. He however, blames residents for dumping garbage alongside the road yet the Division authorities have provided garbage skips on most streets in the town.

The Demonstration comes barely one month after vendors at Hoima Hardware Market protested over uncollected garbage in the Market. Daniel Kaseregenye, the Hoima Municipal Deputy Town clerk recently told Uganda Radio Network that the Municipality is in a financial crisis that has made garbage collection difficult.
