Hundreds gathered at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala in a special mass organized to pray for Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, who is now in detention at Makindye Military Barracks.

The prayers organized by Ugandan musicians, follow the arrest of Kyagulanyi, several other legislators and their supporters, from a campaign trail in Arua district, in the West Nile sub-region. The group had gone to Arua to canvass votes for independent candidate Kassiano Wadri, the eventual winner of the Arua municipality parliamentary race.

But the trail turned chaotic when, a group, suspected to be part of Kyagulanyi's people power movement, allegedly disrupted the presidential motorcade and pelted stones at one of the vehicles in the convoy shattering its windscreen. One person, a driver identified as Yasin Kawuma, was killed in the aftermath.

Four MPs; Robert Kyagulanyi, Gerald Karuhanga, Paul Mwiru and Francis Zaake were arrested together with former MP Micheal Mabikke, Arua municipality MP-elect Kassiano Wadri and 30 other people.

The rest were charged with Treason, but Kyagulanyi was arraigned before the General Court Martial and Charged with illegal possession of firearms. He has been reported to be in poor health as a result of torture, subjected to him while under custody.

It is against this background that friends and supporters converged in the special mass that brought together politicians, university students, musicians and relatives, top pray for his release, together with all persons who were arrested in Arua.

During the mass, the Chancellor for Kampala Archdiocese Father Joseph Ssebunya asked the government to be concerned and take care of the people who have been reported to be in dire need of treatment. He added that the suspects should be set free if the government cannot provide medical services to them.

Barbara Kyagulanyi, the wife of the incarcerated legislator, however, asked the congregation to remain strong and continue praying for Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

Former Presidential Candidate Dr Abed Bwanika told Uganda Radio Network that he came to pray with the hope that the same God who saved Uganda in the past can still stretch his hand and his Uganda.

The East African Legislative Assembly MP Fred Mukasa Mbidde noted that he doesn't expect the President of a country to be at the loggerheads with the citizens. Instead, he adds, the president should be working in the interest of the people.
