A 45-year-old man has committed suicide after strangling his wife dead in Soroti district. James Akesa, a resident of Ojama Village in Ocokican Sub County was found hanging on a mango tree, about 150 meters from his compound on Monday morning.

Preliminary Police findings indicate that Akesa suspected his wife, Dora Achipa, 35 of being involved in an extra marital affair. It’s reported that the couple picked up a quarrel on Sunday that ended up in a fight.

Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman says that during the quarrel and the subsequent fight, Akesa picked a rope that he used to strangle his wife at night. He later used the same rope to hang himself on a mango tree.

Ageca says that the Police has taken the bodies of the couple for postmortem before they are handed back to the clan for burial. He notes that the Police are on the ground to avert any  revenge attacks on the clan and relatives of the man.

It’s a common practice in Teso for relatives of the victim of family violence to retaliate by attacking relatives of the aggressors through burning houses, destroying property, and sometimes stealing cattle in the area.
