Nakawa Chief Magistrate James Eremye says his visit to Luzira Prison today was not targeted at former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye alone. Instead, he says, it was to assess the detention facilities and remand standards of all suspects.

Eremye led the Nakawa District Chain-Linked Committee (DCC) for the visit through which they interacted with prisons authorities and inmates.

Speaking to journalists shortly before the tour, Eremye said the visit is to brace the judiciary with the concerns which affect the prisons service. He says the DCC had made earlier plans to visit the detention center as part of its circuit.

The Chief Magistrate's visit comes on the heels of concerns by Besigye on fears for his life while in prison, as well as criticism over his limitation to communicate with his supporters.

A meeting was held in the prisons before the tour of the facilities commenced. They were joined by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Opposition Chief Whip Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda.

Lukwago had initially been blocked by prisons officials from entering the meeting room.

Lukwago and Ssemujju later declined to continue with the tour and opted to visit Besigye.

Journalists were barred from attending the meeting, staying outside the prison premises for over seven hours.

The committee is expected to present its findings on the tour on July 29 before the DCC general meeting.
