 Bufunda abattoir in Ibanda Municipality is operating in unhygienic conditions.

Found in Bufunda division, the abattoir which is the main slaughterhouse in the municipality, hosts dozens of butchers who supply meat to Ibanda town and the neighbouring areas.

However, the drainage system in the abattoir is clogged and animal waste littered all over.

Our reporter visited the abattoir and found butchers slaughtering animals on dirty ground, using dirty water to clean the meat that is later packed into polythene bags to be transported for sale.

Gloves, gumboots and aprons are not an issue at the abattoir with all the people involved in the slaughtering and handling of meat using bare hands.

The abattoir also lacks an incinerator and as a result the contaminated meat or animal parts that are not consumed are just disposed of in the open.

The the only toilet facility at the abattoir is bushy and not in use.

A meat inspector found at the abattoir told URN that his responsibility is only to ensure that sick animals are not slaughtered.

Friday Mugume, a butcher says that the conditions have been in the current state for about four years. He says that the biggest challenge is that the good practices are observed by few butchers who in the long run also give up.

William Ndyanabo, the Ibanda Municipality health Inspector told our reporter that the authorities are also concerned about the state of the abattoir. Ndyanabo says that the abattoir was set up by a private investor at a time when the authorities had not secured money to construct the municipal abattoir but is now in the final stages of completing their own in Katehe, Kagango division.

Ndyanabo says that the new abattoir will have an incinerator, running water, modern store, slaughtering slab and kraal where animals awaiting slaughter will be kept. He says that they should have started using it but the butchers were reluctant because they preferred the old one because it is near the town.
