The Iganga High Court is yet to kick off almost three years after it was created due to lack of infrastructure. In 2015, the Judiciary created a High court circuit in Iganga district.

The court is expected to handle cases from eight districts including among others Iganga, Kaliro, Bugiri, Namutumba and Mayuge. The High court was expected to operate in the buildings hosting Iganga Chief Magistrate's court.

The building has a single hall, which hosts the grade 1 and chief magistrate's court sessions leaving no space for high court. Iganga chief magistrate's court has five magistrates at grade 1 level, three grade 2 and one chief magistrate who handle 400 cases each, annually.

The Iganga Chief Magistrate, Jessica Chemeri, says dues to the failure to operationalize the high court most of the criminal cases are forwarded to Jinja high court.

"Iganga presides over cases from eight districts within Busoga sub region. Most of the criminal cases registered at Jinja high court stem from Iganga,” she said.

Adding that, “If we get buildings to host the high court sessions, all these cases will be handled here and litigants shall have justice on time.”

According to Chemeri, they sometimes fail to proceed with cases where minors are the key witnesses due to lack of funds to transport them to Jinja high court.

The Judiciary Spokesperson, Solomon Muyita told URN that they are looking for funds to secure land to host the necessary infrastructure. "The plans of constructing more buildings which are meant to host the Iganga high court are available, but we haven't acquired land for it," he said.
