Iganga Hospital to Get Facelift

According to Dr Amandua, China Nat Aero Tech Eng, a Chinese construction firm has been hired to undertake the renovation, which is expected to be completed in December 2014.

Iganga hospital is set to undergo huge repairs to the tune of 10 billion shillings with funding from World Banka. Dr Jacinto Amandua,the Commissioner Clinical Services Ministry of Health says the renovation work, which is scheduled to start in December 2013, will be executed under the Uganda Health Systems Strengthening Project –UHSSP.

He says the rehabilitation is aimed at improving service delivery at the hospital.Dr Amandua says the rehabilitation will include improvement of infrastructure, equipment, training the work force and management systems.

According to Dr Amandua, China Nat Aero Tech Eng, a Chinese construction firm has been hired to undertake the renovation, which is expected to be completed in December 2014. Iddi Bateganya, the Acting Senior Administrator Iganga hospital says the renovation will also include the removal of asbestos sheets from the wards and improvement of the drainage and sanitary systems, which broke down.

 

Bateganya says the renovation of the hospital is line with government’s decision to elevate it to a referral. The news of the renovation of the hospital has excited Iganga town council residents. Lucy Ataliba, an expectant mother says the renovation will boost the image of the hospital and health sector in the district.

Joshua Kalaamu, who is currently admitted in the male ward with fractured limbs, says the construction of new wards will create more space for patients at the hospital. In July 2013, Peter Mugema, the MP Iganga Municipality led residents in a demonstration to protest the poor state of Iganga hospital. Iganga hospital was constructed in 1968 with a bed capacity of 120 patients. 

Currently, the hospital caters for more than 500 patients drawn from seven districts.
