Installation of 500 Solar Street Lights Kicks Off in Gulu Town

The installation of 500 solar street lights in Gulu municipality has kicked off. The Shillings 3.2 billion projects is part of the additional funding from the Uganda Support for Municipal Infrastructural Development –USMID project.  

Terrence Odonga, the Gulu Municipal Engineer told URN in an interview that the installation of the solar street lights is being done by Mesco Limited. Odonga says the work that kicked off on November 14th, 2019 with the setting of bases for the solar street light poles will take four months.

    

He revealed that the solar street lights are being installed along 19 newly rehabilitated roads under the Japan International Cooperation Agency –JICA Project. They include Andrea Olal, Olya, Bank Lane, Acholi, Coronation, Queens’s Avenue, and Awich Roads among others. 

Denise Nono, a member of Gulu Municipal Council Executive Committee, said after setting the bases, the contractor will immediately begin planting the solar street light poles before installing the solar panels and lights.

Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu District Chairman asked the municipal authorities to put pressure on the contractor to complete the work before the festive season sets in to improve security in the town center. The installation of the solar street lights has excited Gulu town residents, saying it will ease movement at night.

According to Gulu Municipal Engineer, each solar street light pole will have a lightning arrester, inbuilt solar panel and earthing system.
