Buruuli Chiefdom has marked the 20th coronation
anniversary. The Chiefdom seceded from the Buganda Kingdom, but Mengo still
considers the Chiefdom part of it and conducts activities that further its
interests.
Isabaruuli Constantine Mwogezi Butamanya was elected and
crowned cultural head of the chiefdom on 10th December 2004.
On Tuesday, the Chiefdom marked the 20th
coronation anniversary at Kaalemere Ka Nyamusumba palace in Nakasongola town
council under the theme ''Unity in Diversity''.
Samuel MG Kasirye the
Prime Minister of Buruuli Chiefdom said since they crowned their cultural leader, they have
been able to preserve their heritage which was facing threat from the Buganda
kingdom.
Kasirye added that several books, including the Bible, have been translated into the Kiruuli language with the support of the SIL Summer Institute of Linguistics.
Kasirye added that they have also set up a Savings and
Cooperative society where the subjects can acquire credit to boost their
business.
He also added that the chiefdom has embarked on constructing the palace and appreciated the government for committing a 4 billion shillings grant towards the project, on top of President Yoweri Museveni's personal contribution of 300 million shillings.
However, Noah Mutebi the Nakasongola County Member of Parliament
said that despite the achievements, the area is facing abject poverty and rampant conflicts because
the majority of the subjects are squatters on the land owned by absent landlords.

While addressing his subjects, Isabaruuli Constantine Mwogezi Butamanya the cultural head
of Buruuli chiefdom said that he was happy that within the 20 years, they have
been able to foster unity in the area irrespective of cultural diversity.
Butamanya however expressed fears that land conflicts are threatening development because the majority of his subjects are
squatters.
Butamanya explained that although President Yoweri Museveni donated the land at Kyarubanga forest reserve to benefit the sitting tenants, there are still complaints that allocations are yet to benefit them.
Butamanya asked the government to extend the land fund program to Nakasongola district where it buys land and donates it to squatters
to acquire land for sustainable development and end the land conflicts.
