The prolonged dry spell in Isingiro district has taken a huge toll on livestock farmers. Livestock farmers in Mbale, Rugaga and Endizi sub counties in Bukanga County in Isingiro district are the most affected.

Livestock farmers in the three sub counties lack pasture to feed their animals including goats and cows. Statistics from Isingiro District Production Department show that 100 have died within a space of one month.

The prolonged drought has forced some farmers to drive their animals to the neighboring sub counties and Tanzania.  Bernard Tumukunde, a livestock farmer from Rugaga Sub County, says he has so far lost three cows to drought.

Tumukunde says he has been feeding his animals on banana peelings he collects from people's homes, but he can no longer find them because the bananas are out of season.  He says some of his friends with connections in Tanzania have left so as not to lose their animals.

Geoffrey Nkwaya, a resident of Endizi Sub County says in the past, they would have pasture for their animals in October, but this time around it has delayed to rain. According to Nkwaya, they currently walk long distances in search of water and pasture for their animals. Nkwaya who is yet to lose any animal is worried that his animals may start dying if doesn't rain anytime soon.

Dr. Bruhan Kasozi, the Isingiro District Veterinary Officer, says although prolonged drought isn't new in the area; the current drought is the worst in the past ten years.
