A jilted man in Kitgum District has killed his two-month-old baby during a fight with his ex-wife.
The
suspect identified as Raymond Akena reportedly killed the baby during a
fight with his ex-wife Vicky Akanyo from her home, in Kaolo Cell,
Namokora Sub-county. Akena is said to
have hit the boy’s head on the ground on Sunday morning.
Namokora Sub-county Councilor Kenneth
Nyero Nyok-cek told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that Akanyo
had ended her marriage with the suspect two months ago after a
rocky relationship.
According to Nyok-cek,
the suspect left his home in Onyala village about five kilometres away
and headed to his ex-wife’s home where he began fighting her over
unclear reasons. He says in the process of the fights, Akena grabbed the
baby and hit his head on the ground, killing him instantly.
Nyok-cek
notes that the matter would have been resolved if the man had
approached local authorities or his elders to resolve their grievances.
URN established that Akena was roughed up by locals from the village
shortly after killing the baby but was rescued by the Police from
Namokora Police Post.
A police
Officer at Namokora Police Post who requested to remain anonymous since he doesn’t speak for the police said that the suspect suffered head injuries during the mob action, but was later taken back to the police cells after receiving treatment.
By last evening, the police
had rushed to the crime scene to commence an investigation into the
incident. Meanwhile, the deceased baby's body was still lying at
Namokora Health Centre IV pending postmortem to ascertain the exact
cause of death.
