According to Ismael Kabuye, an Imam at Taquwa Mosque Katega aged 69 died on Sunday
night at Islamic health centre in Jinja town.
"He had apparently suffered multiple organ failure, heart
disease, among others since 2014. Since January this year, he has been in and
out of hospital," he says.
Ibrahim Shamil Byakika, the Busoga region Muslims spokesperson
says that the deceased has been sick since 2014 and in 2016, he was taken for
heart surgery in India.
"He came back feeling much better but he had to return to India for review
However, his condition deteriorated and he has been in that
situation till he met his death," he added.
He said that last week, Katega's condition worsened and he was
taken to Islamic clinic.
"After admission, he
relapsed into coma. He never talked again as he lay motionless on his hospital
bed surrounded by family and medics," he said.
Byakika said the late had worked hard to protect Muslim property within Jinja
district, for instance, the cemetery next to Jinja regional referral
"The Muslim cemetery was being claimed by Jinja municipal Council. Sheikh
Katega led a group of Muslim clerics in 2009 to stage a peaceful protest at the
cemetery for two days," he said.
Byakika also added that the deceased had also protested against a
sect of tabliq Muslims bent on grabbing a two-acre piece of land located along
Mvule crescent in Jinja town.
He said the location has the popular Amin's mosque where Busoga Muslims plan to
construct the largest mosque in the region.
