Kaberebere Town Council Struggles to Secure Garbage Dumpsite

Patrick Kajumba, the Kaberebere town council LC III, says their biggest challenge is the absence of a dumping site. Kajumba says they had identified a piece of land valued at Shillings 100 million but they failed to raise money to buy it prompting the owner to find other buyers.

Kabebere town council in Isingiro district is stuck with several tons of garbage because of its failure to secure a waste dumping site. Kabebere was elevated to a town council in 2010. Heaps of Garbage are a common sight in the town council. The stench from the rotting garbage attracts pigs and dogs, which scavenge the waste for food.

Although there are no records of the garbage generated in the town, a lot of waste mainly from the weekly market held on every Monday leaves the town in a mess. Florence Mastiko, a resident of Kabebere Town Council, asks the authorities to wake up from their honey moon and get to work.

According to Matsiko, the presence of the waste heaps compromises the hygiene in the town, adding that situation worsens whenever it rains. Fedelis Muhangi, another resident, says previously some residents would collect the waste and use it as manure in their gardens but they stopped for fear of transmitting Banana Bacterial Wilt to their gardens.

Patrick Kajumba, the Kaberebere town council LC III, says their biggest challenge is the absence of a dumping site. Kajumba says they had identified a piece of land valued at Shillings 100 million but they failed to raise money to buy it prompting the owner to find other buyers.

He explains that they only receive Shillings 20 million annually for development, which means they require about five years to raise money for buying land for the waste dumping site. Kajumba says they are hunting for someone to take up some land in the town council in exchange for land outside the central business district, which they can use for a dumping site.
