Harriet Gonza, the officer in charge of Kyamulibwa prisons in Kalungu district is on the spot for allegedly encroaching on land belonging to Buganda kingdom.

The piece of land measuring 140 by 120ft is found in Kyamulibwa village opposite Kyamulibwa sub county headquarters.

The Sub county chief, Charles Lwanyaga, says Gonza has started dumping construction materials such as sand and bricks on kingdom land without their consent.

Lwanyaga told journalists on Wednesday that they were surprised to find the kingdom land with piles of building materials and he was shocked to receive information that the prisons officer, Gonza had taken over this piece of land.

He says county authorities have been farming on the land and had even started up a banana plantation on it, saying they were surprised to get information that the officer had taken it over without their knowledge.

Lwanyaga says he has petitioned Budu county chief Pokino Vincent Mayiga to intervene because the county is likely to lose this prime piece of land to the prisons officer.

He wonders why prisons picked interest in this piece of land yet the kingdom gave them a big chunk of land, which hosts Kyamulibwa prison.

The Buddu county deputy Pokino Abudallah Kato has confirmed receiving several complaints from different chiefs indicating encroachment on kingdom land in their areas.

He says similar complaints have been raised in Buwunga, Kyanamuka and now in Kyamulibwa. He warns people against occupying kingdom land illegally.

Kato says that he has asked Buganda Land Board authorities in Buddu to intervene so as to protect kingdom land from grabbers.

He says his office has petitioned the Masaka Regional Prisons Officer to explain why their officer in Kyamulibwa has taken over kingdom land.

Gonza dismisses allegations of land grabbing, saying she has for long been using the land. She wonders why Kingdom officials could come up with such a claim.

She declined to explain why she has decided to build on the land well knowing it belongs to the kingdom.
