Kanungu Woman Killed in Bar Brawl, Suspect Lynched

According to Paison Byomuhangi, Kasiro village LC1 Chairman, Ahereza joined Tugumisirize in a group of others at Keti Ninsiima’s bar and started drinking alcohol. However, the two developed a misunderstanding and started fighting. In the process, Ahereza pushed Tugumisirize down hard and she died instantly. Byomuhangi says that when Tugumisirize died, Ahereza took off, but other revelers chased him. He was caught and beaten to death in revenge.

Police in Kanungu district have launched investigations into the circumstances under which a 47-year-old was killed in a bar fight and later the suspect was also lynched by an angry mob.

The deceased identified as Oliva Tugumisirize , a resident of Kasiro village, Kanyambeho parish, Nyakinoni sub county was killed by Clinton Ahereza 23, of the same residence on Friday evening at around 06:00 PM. 

According to Paison Byomuhangi, Kasiro village LC1 Chairman, Ahereza joined Tugumisirize in a group of others at Keti Ninsiima’s bar and started drinking alcohol.   However, in the process, the duo developed a misunderstanding and started fighting. 

In the process, Ahereza pushed Tugumisirize down hard and she died instantly. 

Byomuhangi says that when Tugumisirize died, Ahereza took off, but other revelers chased him.  He was caught and beaten to death in revenge.   

Byomuhangi says that Ahereza is known to be temporarily insane and the exact reasons behind the cause of the fight are not clear.  Byaomuangi also faults Ninsiima saying that had it not been that she turned her home into a bar, such an incident was not going to happen.   

Elly Maate, police spokesperson for Kigezi region confirms the incident saying that the two bodies have been taken to Kihihi health center IV for postmortem. 

Maate also says that Ninsiima, the owner of the bar is on the run after learning that police want to arrest her for questioning why she was operating a bar during Covid-19 Lockdown. 

The case is registered at Kihihi police station under file number CRB 95/2021.

Many cases of killing in bar fights have been recorded in Kigezi region during the Covid-19 lockdown when bars and nightclubs were closed under presidential directives.  John Kwizera, 53, a peasant and resident of Gate Central Ward, Chahafi Town Council, in Kisoro district was two days ago allegedly killed by Deus Ndayaje while in a bar fight.  

In May this year, Amanya Francis a resident of Nyamiyaga B in Kazindiro parish, Bugangari Sub County,  Rukungiri district was killed during a bar fight with his colleagues at around 3 am in a nearby trading centre over a barmaid.   

Moses Akampurira, a resident of Kitumba sub-county in Kabale district was on August 1st, 2021 killedd in a fight over a woman at New California T & J bar Oasis Pub, a popular hangout for commercial sex workers in Kigongi Central division in Kabale Municipality.
