Kasese Catholic Diocese on Tuesday celebrated 60 years of priesthood of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Emeritus Egidio Nkaijanabwo.

The celebrations were held at Nkaijanabwo’s residence in Mubuku town council.

Born in Rugazi in the present-day Rubirizi District in 1935, Nkaijanabwo was ordained priest in 1989 and consecrated the first Bishop of Kasese Catholic Diocese in March 1989.

Nkaijanabwo was succeeded by Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira in April 2014.

Nkaijanabwo is remembered for opening up many catholic schools, encouraging young women to become nuns among others.

Bishop Kibira hailed his predecessor as a man who tirelessly worked for the diocese that has since transformed the lives of so many people.  He says Nkaijanabwo is a reflection of a man who set goals and sacrificed early pleasures to pursue a calling he received when still young.

Kibira used the celebrations to remind politicians to honour pledges they make towards supporting church work and its leadership.  This is after speakers at the celebrations said that several leaders in the district had pledged to support the emeritus Bishop in his retirement.

Bishop Emeritus Nkaijanabo attributed his success to discipline. He said that he is still dedicating his time to encourage young people to live a righteous lifestyle so that they can benefit their societies.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the former Chief Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe hailed his brother for encouraging young people to join priesthood.  He challenged young people to be faithful to their professions.

The Kasese Municipality Mayor Chance Kahindo hailed the former bishop of the diocese for working tirelessly to reconcile politicians whenever they had disagreements.
