Kasese District has received a consignment of 10,000 doses of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries. The district plans to vaccinate over 26,000 cows, 240,000 goats, and 30,000 pigs across the entire region.

Earlier this year, Kasese also received over 3,000 doses of the rabies vaccine. Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the Kasese District Veterinary Officer, has urged cattle farmers to actively participate in the mass vaccination campaign to help eliminate the persistent FMD outbreaks in the area.

While no cases have been reported in the district, Kibaya emphasized the importance of safeguarding animals from the virus. Eliphazi Muhindi, the Kasese District Chairperson, expressed gratitude for the vaccine supply, which is expected to ease the strain on livestock activities often caused by quarantine measures. He highlighted the significance of widespread participation in the vaccination campaign to prevent the spread of FMD.

In January this year, authorities in Kasese temporarily banned the trade and transportation of animals into or through the district following an outbreak of FMD in neighboring districts. Kasese is a key transit point for trucks transporting cattle to markets in neighboring DR Congo.
