The Resident District Commissioner Katakwi has called for religious leaders to be involved in multi-party politics so as to bring serenity in the political game.
Joseph Arwata says religious leaders must join politics to clean up the dirt in handling public affairs which lacks Godliness, respect, and integrity.
The RDC was speaking as the chief guest at the on-going Peace Week celebrations in Lira District. He says religious leaders and government need to work together to define the future of this country.
The Peace Week was organized by Peace and Justice Commission of Lira Catholic Diocese, Caritas and Centenary Bank, under the theme: “Religious freedom: The Path to Peace.”
Commenting on the theme, Arwata said freedom is liberty to act without hindrance but also not to interfere with other people’s freedom. He added that religious leaders should not be left out of the political activity and participation.
He however added that religion is sometimes used to abuse peace instead of being a vehicle of enhancing peaceful co-existence. He cited the Kanungu cult in which close to 1000 people perished in a church fire in March 2000.
The annual event was attended by members of justice and peace commissions from all catholic dioceses in Uganda. Bishops Joseph Franzeli of Lira, Sabino Odoki of Arua, Josesph Philips of Karamoja and Archbishop John Baptist Odama of Gulu attended.
Early this week, President Yoweri Museveni warned religious leaders against commenting on politics, arguing that it should be left to politicians.
