According to the hospital Director, Dr Nehemiah Katusiime, the contracts
of the new officials started on January 1st and that this brings the
total number of anesthesiologists at the facility to ten.
Katusiime notes that to fully revamp operations in theatres, the hospital still
needs more human resource as they have plans of hiring special care nurses too
since already they have received theatre equipment donations from UNICEF.
The hospital conducts an average of 20 caesarean section operations every day
and a total of up to 600 per month. For all these to happen in addition to
other gynaecological emergencies and other elective surgeries that they
conduct, there has to be an anaesthesiologist attending to each of them.
Katusiime said that with the load of patients, ten anesthesiologists are
still few. But, with such a number, the hospital is better than many facilities
across the country that operates without a single expert.
Aliti, at the Ministry of Health, said they have reports of health centre IVs
that have stopped conducting surgeries even with fully-fledged theatres because
of lack of anesthesiologists.
This year, the Ministry of Health plans to deploy some 70 anesthesiologists
who have been undergoing training at Busitema University and Mbarara University
of Science and Technology.
