Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has directed arcade owners in the city to avail free toilets for traders operating in their premises.

"The Management of Kampala Capital City Authority hereby issues a reminder to property owners, tenants and the public at large that access to toilet facilities in buildings such as arcades, markets and public places among others must be free," a public notice which will be running in the media reads.

Adding that "This directive takes immediate and all property owners are expected to comply.  KCCA will start conducting inspections to ensure compliance by Business owners and Landlords in providing free access to sanitary facilities by their workers and customers.”

The directive is line with orders issued by President, Yoweri Museveni while touring markets in Kampala two weeks ago. During the tour, traders complained to the president that they are charged Shillings 300 each time they visit the toilet facilities on top of the rental fees.

The KCCA Spokesperson, Peter Kaujju told Uganda Radio Network that several meetings have been held with arcade owners reminding them to avail free toilets to traders who rent their buildings.

Kaujju said Health Inspectors and Law Enforcement Officers will be deployed to ensure that the directive is implemented.

He said it doesn't make sense for tenants to pay to access toilets in public buildings.
