The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has temporarily closed five roads to facilitate ongoing construction under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project, funded by the African Development Bank for US$288 million.
According to a statement from KCCA, Speke Road at the Grand Imperial Hotel is one of the affected roads. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes such as Lumumba Avenue, Nakaseero Road, Ternan Avenue, Ssezibwa Road, or Shimon Road to reach their destinations.
Kayemba Road at Katwe Market is also temporarily closed, and road users are encouraged to access the city and other areas via Lubiri Ring Road, Katwe Road, Queensway, and Jjuuko Road. Another road closure affects Sir Albert Cook Road at the Sentema Road crossing. KCCA recommends alternative routes such as Kisingiri Road, Sentema Road, Canon Kivebulaya Road, Bulange Way, Ham Mukasa Road, or Mutesa I Road. Channel Close at 6th Street is similarly inaccessible due to ongoing construction in the area.
Kisenyi Road at Musajjâalumbwa and Butikiro Road crossing is also closed. Motorists can use Mwanga II Road, Lubaga Road, Kisenyi Road, Lubiri Ring Road, and Mengo Hill Road as alternative routes. Engineer Morris Orwenyo, the project officer, explained that the road upgrades in Kampala are expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2025.
The closures have caused disruptions in traffic flow, leading to congestion on some roads in Kampala. KCCA has urged motorists to remain patient and use the suggested alternative routes to minimize delays.
