KCCA To Use Schools For COVID-19 Vaccination For Teachers

According to Namuddu, the new initiative does not stop teachers from getting the jab from any of the designated health centers and hospitals. However, she says it is aimed at bringing the exercise closer to the teachers and attaining their target by the end of May.

Kampala capital City Authority (KCCA) has started identifying schools to act as COVID-19 vaccination centers. Juliet Namuddu, the Director of Education and Social Services in KCCA says that they are working together with the Health and Environment directorate to identify schools to host COVID-19 vaccination centers to bring the service close to the teachers .

Teachers were placed among frontline workers meant to benefit from the phase of the AstraZeneca vaccination campaign. They expected to take jabs at their nearest health centre III, IV and hospitals.  However, the Education and Sports Ministry notes that the majority of the teachers have not responded positively to the vaccination exercise.

Only about 10,000 of the over 500,000 teachers who registered for the jab across the country have turned up for the exercise. According to Namuddu, the new initiative does not stop teachers from getting the jab from any of the designated health centers and hospitals. However, she says it is aimed at bringing the exercise closer to the teachers and attaining their target by the end of May.

She also explains that using schools to carry out COVID-19 vaccination will help them to directly monitor and determine the numbers vaccinated in the city in order to share the information with the relevant authorities. Namuddu says that their target to identify five schools from the five divisions of Kampala city with each division at least hosting one COVID-19 vaccination center.
