There is excitement in Kichwamba sub-county in Kabarole district following the commencement of the works to extend clean piped water to the sub-county. For years, residents of Kicwamba have been appealing to the government to rescue the sub-county from the water stress challenges in vain.

Now, Gilbert Byamugisha, the manager Mid-Western Umbrella for water and sanitation, a Ministry of water agency contracted to extend water to Kichwamba, the government has allocated Shillings 950 million to establish a water treatment plant, rehabilitation of water pipes, and metering, which will take a year.

Byamugisha told URN that under the project, the agency will install over 700 hundred water tap stands in Bwanika, Kihondo, and Mabale parishes, which are the most water-stressed areas. They will later proceed to rehabilitate the Kicwamba gravity flow scheme to ensure stability and effective water supply in the sub-county.

Byamugisha says a team of officials from the Midwestern umbrella has started with sensitization meetings in various parishes across the sub-county to explain to the beneficiaries what the new works entail and particularly about payment of the water services.

“All water used under the new arrangement will be measured, metered, and paid for. One unit, which is equivalent to 50 Jericans will cost Shillings 1690,” he said. He further explained that the metering will also go a long way in curbing water wastage.

Robert Sangwali, a resident of Kihondo trading center in Kihondo parish, said the trading center has a market with over 2000 thousand people. He, however, says that they only have one public tap stand, which often inconveniences the population hence the need to add more.

Annette Kabalinzi, a resident of Mabale parish in the Kichwamba sub-county says the installation of water in the area will end the era of sharing water sources with domestic animals, which has been the norm in the area.

Peter Bazira, the Kicwamba Sub County LC V councilor, said the water extension project does not include any aspect of land compensation. He calls upon community members to be cooperative for the successful implementation of the project.

Jack Magezi Kichuchuli, the Kichwamba sub-county LC 3 chairperson said the service providers should ensure that the quality of water to be supplied in homesteads is up to standard to avoid hiccups that could cause chaos and non-payment.
