Suspected Cattle Thief Arrested in Kiryandongo

Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza told Uganda Radio Network that Rwihakare invaded a Kraal belonging to one Mugisha, a resident of Kiryandongo and took off with 23 cows about two months. Police have been pursuing him since then.

Police in Kiryandongo district is holding a 35-year-old man on allegations of cattle theft. The suspect has been identified as Paul Rwihakare, a herdsman and a resident of kiryandongo.

Albertine Region Police Spokesperson Julius Hakiza told Uganda Radio Network that Rwihakare invaded a Kraal belonging to one Mugisha, a resident of Kiryandongo and took off with 23 cows about two months. Police have been pursuing him since then.

Hakiza says that the suspect is one of the cattle thieves that have been terrorizing cattle farmers in Bunyoro sub-region.

 Upon his arrest, Rwihakare admitted to having stolen the cows and sold them in Kiruhura district at a cost of 35 million Shillings.

Last week police in Hoima staged a night roadblock on the Hoima-kaiso-Tonya road and arrested 11 suspected cattle thieves ferrying stolen cows from Buseruka. The arrested suspects have since been remanded to Kiryatete government prison in Hoima Municipality.

Records at Hoima Central Police Station indicate that more than 200 cows have been stolen from farmers since January this year. The most affected farmers are from the sub-counties of Bugambe,  Kizirafumbi,  Buseruka,  Kabwoya and Kyangwali among others.
