Tension is mounting among National Resistance Movement-NRM party officials and supporters in Kisoro following the decision by the district party Chairman Dr. Philemon Mateke to back independent candidates. Some of the independents being fronted by Mateke include his own daughter Sarah Mateke, a contestant for the Kisoro Woman MP seat, Eddie Kwizera Waghahungu, the incumbent Bufumbira South MP and incumbent Kisoro LC V Chairperson Milton Bazanye Mutabazi.

Sarah Mateke contested in the primaries for the Kisoro Woman MP NRM party and lost to the incumbent Rose Kabagyenyi. Eddie Kwizera Waghahungu, the incumbent Bufumbira South MP contested for the party ticket for his constituency and lost to former ethics Minister James Nsaba Buturo while Milton Bazanye Mutabazi, the incumbent Kisoro LC V Chairperson lost to his rival Abel Bizimana.

However, all the primary election losers have picked nominations forms to contest as independents.  Milton Bazanye Mutabazi says their decision to contest as independents doesn\'t mean that they have declared war on the party adding that they will remain loyal to the party chairman Yoweri Museveni. The decision by the primary election losers to bounce back as independents has not gone down well with some party officials and members.

Ramadan Ndikuyeze, the Kisoro District NRM vice chairperson says the move is an unacceptable. According to Ndikuyeze, the primary election losers should concede defeat or quit.  He says the party cannot have people on board, who after losing elections claiming the polls were not free and fair. Ndikuyeze says they will remain focused and only support the official party candidates.

Amos Hakizimana, the former Kisoro District speaker says it is unfortunate that the party chairperson is driven by his personal interests as opposed to the party interests. Abel Bizimana, the NRM candidate for Kisoro LC V chairperson's seat says he is surprised that his opponent Milton Bazanye Mutabazi is still talking of irregularities even after fresh polls were held and he defeated him.

The NRM Electoral Commission conducted fresh polls in Muramba Sub County on November 17th in response to a petition by Mutabazi citing electoral malpractices. Even with the fresh polls in Muramba Sub County, Mutabazi still lost to his rival. Bizimana is however, confident that they will defeat the independents since it is the same voters who threw out in the primaries who will vote in the general elections.

Reverend Emmanuel Mfitumukiza Biguri, a Human Rights Activist in Kisoro district says the losers have an uphill task to convince the voters to vote for them. He however, warns them to be aware of the consequences of their action to them as individuals and their party as well.
