Leaders in Kisoro district on Tuesday stormed UMEME offices protesting the persistent power outages in the district.

The leaders were led by the Kisoro district Woman Member of Parliament, Rose Kabagenyi, Kisoro District Chairman, Abel Bizimana and Nyakabande LC III Chairperson Funi  Ntawera among others.

Bizimana says that the persistent power outages have not only crippled business but also affected service delivery in health facilities.   Bizimana says that the people with businesses such as saloons are finding it costly to keep in business.

Kabagenyi says that due to consistent power outages three expectant mothers have died at Kisoro hospital in the past one week. She accuses UMEME for failure to explain the cause of the outage as well as failure to fix it in time.

Ntawera says that if the outage is not solved by UMEME this week, they will mobilize residents and hold a violent demonstration.

Last week, Kabagenyi presented the same issue before parliament. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah tasked government to find a solution to the power outages in the district immediately to save lives.

The Finance State Minister, David Bahati, defended the government saying that the Energy Minister was working with Umeme to resolve the problem.
