Kitgum Accident Victim Succumbs to Injuries

A 25-year-old man who sustained severe injuries after a concrete mixer truck belonging to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd, overturned in Kitgum Municipality on Monday has succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased identified as Yonah Odokonyero was a casual labourer working for the Chinese firm that is currently undertaking the construction of the multi-billion Kitgum Central Market in Central Division.

Odokonyero died on Monday afternoon at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu city where he had been rushed in critical condition. The deceased was run over by the truck with registration UBG 152D after falling from the rear end where he was seated when its driver lost control and veered off the road.

The incident happened at about 1:35 pm along Pager-crescent road. 

Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong says the police have detained the driver, Sebastian Okech 38, a resident of Gang Dyang, Pandwong Division in Kitgum Municipality for questioning at Kitgum Central Police station. He says the truck was also towed away from the accident scene and is now being kept at the Police station pending further investigation.

The case has been registered under TAR 65/2021 at Kitgum Central Police station.

Kitgum Resident District Commissioner William Komakech on Monday blamed the accident on reckless driving by the truck driver.
