According to Canon Gladys Oyat, the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, the funding will be used to cater for various activities and logistics, including the construction of a latrine at the celebration site among others.
Kitgum District is preparing for the 48th St Janani Luwum's Day celebrations, with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) revealing that they are seeking UGX 98 million in funding to ensure the event's success. The celebrations will take place on February 16, 2025, at Wigweng in Mucwini Sub-county, Kitgum District, and will be held under the theme "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" from Galatians 6:9-10.
Canon Gladys Oyat, the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized that the funding will cover various activities and logistics, including the construction of a latrine at the celebration site, among other essential needs. "As the local organizing committee, we have a lot of work to do to make this event a success," Canon Oyat said. "We are calling on the private sector and well-wishers to support us with the necessary funding."
Canon Oyat further explained that while the central organizing committee provides tents and chairs for the event, the local organizing committee is responsible for other vital aspects, such as food and accommodation for foot pilgrims, intercessors, and cultural dancers.
Rev. Wilson Kitara, the Bishop of the Diocese of Kitgum, revealed that both the Diocese of Northern Uganda and Kitgum Diocese will animate this year’s celebrations. "We are expecting over 39 Anglican Bishops from the Church of Uganda’s province to attend this year's event," Rev. Kitara said. "We are working tirelessly to ensure that the celebrations are a success and that our guests are well taken care of."
The 48th St Janani Luwum's Day celebrations are expected to attract thousands of pilgrims from across the country and beyond. The event will feature a series of activities, including prayers, hymns, and cultural performances. St Janani Luwum, a prominent Ugandan Anglican priest and martyr, was killed during the regime of President Idi Amin in 1977.
He is remembered for his bravery and commitment to his faith, and his legacy continues to inspire people worldwide. The Local Organizing Committee is urging the public to support the celebrations by attending the event and contributing to the funding. With the necessary support, the committee is confident that the 48th St Janani Luwum's Day celebrations will be a resounding success and a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of St Janani Luwum.
