Kitgum Receives Over 2,000 Doses of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines

Kitgum District Health Department has received another consignment of 2,714 doses of COVID-19 vaccines from the Health Ministry.

The vaccine delivered by the National Medical Stores-NMS includes 2,324 doses of Moderna vaccines and 390 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines. The district health department ran out of COVID-19 vaccines a week ago following what health officials described as an “overwhelming” uptake of COVID-19 vaccine among the populace.

The Acting Kitgum District Health Officer Dr Henry Okello confirmed the delivery of the vaccines in an interview with Uganda Radio Network. Dr Okello says already health workers are undergoing online training by health experts from the Health Ministry especially on administering the new Moderna vaccine.

Dr Okello says vaccination is expected to resume immediately after the health workers are done with the training and distribution of the vaccines to the respective health facilities designated for vaccination.

Kitgum Resident District commissioner William Komakech who also doubles as the district COVID-19 task force chairperson says they will single out targeted groups of people among them vendors and Boda-Boda riders in the coming vaccination drive. He says the district aims at vaccinating a wider section of the population through a door to door vaccination drive as it strives for the country’s possible reopening by the end of the year.

Komakech however encouraged the populace to embrace vaccination citing that arguing that un-vaccinated people may in the near future be unwelcomed in public offices including his office.

He notes that the AstraZeneca Vaccine will be given to only those undertaking the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The latest delivery of vaccine brings to 10,724 doses of COVID-19 vaccine the Health Ministry has so far delivered to Kitgum District.

A total of 8,300 people in Kitgum District have so far received both AstraZeneca and Sinovac COVID-19 jab since March this year when mass vaccination was rolled out by the Health ministry.  Out of the 8,300 people, 553 are health workers, 175 armed forces, 419 elderly persons, and 1,380 teachers all forming the priority groups who have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines.

Uganda received a total of 647,080 doses of the Moderna vaccine in September last month, a donation delivered through the COVAX facility from the United States government.
