A student in Kitgum Municipality died after being struck by a flying piece of a broken lawn mower on Thursday
The deceased was identified as Hellen
Benita Lamwaka, a senior six student at YY Okot Memorial College.
Lamwaka was reportedly struck on the neck and succumbed to injuries upon arrival at Yotkom Medical Center, where she had been rushed for
medical treatment.
She was reportedly seated about 100 meters from where casual
workers were mowing the school lawn when the flying blade struck her.
Anatoli Kangwenzi, the Aswa East
Regional Police commander told Uganda Radio Network Friday that two people who
were operating the machine have been arrested following the incident.
Anatoli identified the suspects
as Reagan Oruni and Geoffrey Komakech Ojara who are currently being detained at Kitgum Central Police Station.
According to Anatoli, a death
inquiry file under DEF 08/2024 has been opened at Kitgum Central Police Station
to investigate the circumstances that led to Lamwaka’s death.
This is not the first incident to
happen in the region. In March 2018, a 62-year-old security guard identified as
Paul Oringa working for Exposs Security Co Ltd was killed after being struck on
the head by a lawn mower blade. The incident happened while the deceased was on
duty at Light Ray Nursery and Primary School in Gulu City.
In December 2019, a
10-year-old girl a resident of Forest Sub-Ward, Laroo Division in the then Gulu
Municipality was killed after a lawn mower blade struck her on the head.
