Kole NRM Chairperson Succumbs to Coronavirus Disease

His sister, Lilly Auma, says the deceased started complaining of cough and flu last week on Friday. She says that he was taken to Lira Medical center where his samples were drawn for Covid19 testing.

The Kole district National Resistance Movement -NRM party chairperson, James Ebong Okalo has succumbed to Covid19. Ebong, 50, breathed his last at Lira Medical center on Wednesday afternoon.  

His sister, Lilly Auma, says the deceased started complaining of cough and flu last week on Friday. She says that he was taken to Lira Medical center where his samples were drawn for Covid19 testing.

Dr. Edmond Aceka, the acting DHO at Lira Regional Referral hospital says the deceased succumbed to Covid19. He says the deceased’s samples that were taken to Entebbe Virus Research Institute on Tuesday for testing turned out positive for Covid-19.  

According to Dr. Acek, they were making arrangements to transfer the deceased NRM chairperson to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for Covid19 treatment when he passed on.

He, however, decried lack of sufficient Covid19 testing kits and called on the public to observe the Standard Operating Procedures instituted by the Health Ministry to contain the spread of the virus.

The death of Okalo brings to two, the number of people who succumbed to Covid19 in Kole District region.  The first victim was Dr. Patrick Odongo, a native of Bala sub-county in Kole district.

Odongo, 56, breathed his last in Lira Regional Referral hospital’s intensive care unit. 

Judith Namirimu Polah Nanyonjo, the Senior Principal nursing Officer in charge Lira Referral hospital, says they are currently handing 169 covid19 patients in their treatment. 

She says another 102 patients recovered and were charged while 18 others are under self-isolation in their homes.
