Kumi district authorities want the total disclosure of the names of men involved in defiling children to fight against teenage pregnancies. The proposal to name and shame came during the launch of the campaign to fight teenage pregnancies in schools and villages across the Kumi district.

Kumi district comes among the districts with the highest cases of teenage pregnancies according to the report from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities- UNFPA 2021. The district registered more than 5,000 teenage pregnancy cases and was rated top across the country. This worsened when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the country leading to the unprecedented two years closure of schools.

Christine Apolot, the Kumi District Woman Member of Parliament, says that most of the girls have been spoilt by men in responsible positions in the district and Boda- boda cyclists. She wants the Police, Education Office, Village Chairpersons, and other offices to investigate, name, and shame people in responsible offices fond of defiling girls.

Statistics in the district indicate that most of the girls drop out of school from primary- three as parents consider them as house-helps and sources of cheap labor, which leads to defilement, pregnancies, and child marriages.

The most affected are Mukongoro, Atutur, and Kanyum sub-counties where health facilities recorded more than 100 teenage pregnancies each during the second lockdown.

Sam Akol, the Kumi District LC V Vice Chairperson, says that fighting teenage pregnancies requires concerted efforts from all the stakeholders.

James Kawlaya, the Kumi District Police Commander faults parents in the district for fueling teenage pregnancies. According to Kawlaya, some parents push their daughters to marry as soon as they see their breasts blossoming.

Samuel Acellam, the ActionAid Programs Officer says that they are worried about the high rates of teenage pregnancies in Kumi and Bukedea Districts. Acellam notes that leaders need to come together and engage with the communities on the dangers of teenage pregnancies.

Uganda registered about 644,955 cases of teenage pregnancies during the COVID-19-induced lockdowns, according to the statistics from the UNFPA.
