Kwania district leaders have launched the repair of major roads to enhance economic activities and improve access to essential services.
The development follows the 2.5 billion shillings disbursed to the district by the National Oil Seed and the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The move comes a few months after the public outcry following the sorry state of roads in the district due to the torrential rainfall.
Alex Opara, Abongomola Sub County LCV Councillor who is also the Secretary for Works and Technical Services, says the district is currently rehabilitating more than 2,000 kilometres of road network in the district.
Opara said they are currently repairing the 12.5 kilometre road stretch from Owiny village to Adok Sub County under National Oil Seed, Nambieso Agro Secondary School road to Akalo border in Kole District, Inomo town council road to Bala Sub County Border in Kole District, among other roads.

Translation: "The road is stretching from Owiny to Adoko Sub County in Dokolo District, and it's 15 kilometres. It is costing 1 billion shillings and is being done by National Oil Seeds. We have a road from Nambieso Agro to Akali border, and there is a road from Inomo to Bala border, and a swamp we are working on. About 11 roads are being worked on. Of all the districts, we are the best district in the North"
Geoffrey Eling Owera, Kwania District Leader of Government Business, who is also the Secretary of Community-Based Services, says the district is struggling to rehabilitate roads with little road equipment and funding.
Eling said they have already worked on 60% of the roads in the district and now plans are underway to work on at least 80% of the road network in the district towards the end of this financial year, 2024/2025, which is ending in June 2025.

Geoffrey Alex Ogwal Adyebo, Kwania District LCV Chairman, said the district has already worked on several roads in the district, citing Olanyotai to Agolowelo Primary School road, Corner Arido via Abapiri to Obolocani road in chawente Sub County and Nambieso Sub County via Bung to Ajokdong trading centre road in Agwata-Dokolo border, among other roads lined up for rehabilitation.
Ogwal Adyebo cautioned residents to desist from the common practice of pulling the ox-plough on roads and moulding bricks along the road reserves.

Locals who spoke to the Uganda Radio Network-URN say the project is timely. Jimmy Odongo of Nambieso said the road rehabilitation works will address the current poor road network in the district.
Kwania district local government has a total road network of 1,321.3 kilometres.
60% of the district roads and community access roads are now accessible, an improvement from 36% of the roads that were accessible in 2024, according to the latest data obtained from the Kwania district engineering department.
