Kyaka Land Dispute: Former Tooro Premier's Farm Attacked

Unknown people have attacked the farm of Stephen Irumba, the former Tooro Prime Minister and killed five cows. Two cows were stolen and three cut.

Irumba has been battling the government over the ownership of a piece of land measuring about 200 acres in Rwentuha Sub County, Kyegegwa district Since last year, .  The disputed land neighbors Kyaka I Refugee Settlement.

In 2016, officials from the Ministry of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees started a process to resettle more than 100 families on the land.

On Monday, unknown people attacked his farm and killed three cows and stole two cows and cut three more.  Irumba who has opened a case at Kyegegwa police station says that he fears for his life and that of his family members.

Following the attack, the police and the army have been deployed on the farm to protect Irumba's workers and cattle.

Kyegegwa District Police Commander Benson Byamukama says that they are carrying out investigations to establish the people who attacked the farm. He said that they are also investigating reports that some local leaders in the area incited the refugees to attack the farm.

The attack on Irumba's farm comes a week after the government started opening boundaries on the disputed land. While launching the exercise, Betty Amongi, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development urged the two parties in the dispute to remain calm during the exercise that will last two weeks.

This is the second time, Irumba's farm has been attacked. In October last year, more than 100 people stormed the farm and attacked the manager Goretti Kajumba. She was rescued by police officers who were guarding the farm. Two cows belonging to Irumba were stolen and one cut.
