Lamwo Education Dep't Pleads With Striking Teachers to Administer Pre-Mock Exams

The District Education Officer Barnabas Langoya says the request to the teachers follows concerns raised by parents, local leaders, and other stakeholders over the two weeks of industrial action that could ruin the pupils’ education and even disrupt the academic calendar.

The Lamwo District education department has pleaded with striking teachers to administer Pre-Mock examinations to primary seven candidates.

The District Education Officer Barnabas Langoya says the request to the teachers follows concerns raised by parents, local leaders, and other stakeholders over the two weeks of industrial action that could ruin the pupils’ education and even disrupt the academic calendar.

Teachers under their umbrella body, Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) announced industrial action on June 15 over a proposed discriminatory salary enhancement in favor of science teachers.

According to Langoya, the striking teachers should consider abandoning their industrial action to allow the planned Pre-Mock examinations to go on interrupted. Langoya says that since the Pre-Mock examinations are slated for July 11-15th, they want teachers attached to report to their respective schools only to administer the exams and return back to their industrial action.

The Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) Chairperson for Lamwo Joseph Onama Kironde says they have not yet received any formal request from the education department over administering the Pre-Mock examinations and maintains they are still on strike.

According to Kironde, their opinion in regards to the nationwide teachers’ industrial action still stands and all teachers are on directives to keep away from duty until their pleas have been handled by the government.

On the Pre-Mock examinations, Kironde says they can only permit the exercise to go on, upon a formal consensus with the office of the district education department.

Langoya says some school teachers he declined to name for fear of being reprimanded, have since heeded the plea and are preparing learners of candidate classes for the Pre-Mock examinations.
