Kirombe Primary School in Madi Opei Sub County, Lamwo district has been temporarily closed following tensions with the neighbouring community. The school was closed on Sunday on the orders of the Lamwo Resident District Commissioner James Nabinson Kidega due to security threats on teaching staff and learners by aggrieved residents following the arrest of one resident who reportedly set two teachers' houses ablaze.

William Arop Obur a former chairperson of the school’s Parents Teachers Association reportedly set the teachers houses ablaze on Saturday in protest of the death of his cow that was seized by the school. According to Kidega, the situation has since been tense with teachers and learners abandoning the school for fear of their lives.

It’s reported that Obur’s cow was taken while grazing on the school compound as a punishment following a bylaw passed by the area village executive committee to guard against the acts of thefts and vandalizing school property.

The Madi Opei Sub County LCIII Chairperson Charles Okwera Obong says the cow was later handed over to Obur after being cautioned and a fine but unfortunately a day after, the animal died under unclear circumstances. This compelled its owner to attack the school authorities demanding compensation.

According to Obong, the situation became tense as Obur set the staff houses ablaze and assaulted teachers and security personnel who beat him causing injuries.

Obur was later admitted to Madi Opei Health centre IV pending re-arrest but he reportedly escaped and is still at large.  Obong says his relatives and clan mates have since been threatening the school authorities and issuing warnings to set the entire school ablaze unless Obur's whereabouts are known.

The situation has since returned to normalcy with security deployed at the school but both the teaching staff and the learners have been shifted to the neighbouring Latolim Primary School in Madi Opei trading center.
