Several institutions under Madi and West Nile Anglican diocese are grappling with unresolved land wrangles with the community.

The most affected institutions include Kuluva Hospital, located along Arua Nebbi Road Uganda Christian University -Arua Campus, and Ringili Primary School all located in Vurra sub-County, Arua District, which occupy about 8,725 acres of land under leasehold land tenure.

Hudson Jackson Andrua, the Chairperson Board of Governors of Kuluva Hospital discloses that the current land wrangle with the Okuvu clan started shortly after the missionaries who came under the Africa Inland Mission group had left after founding the hospital in 1947.

Andrua blamed the land wrangle on the current young generation that has attached monetary value to the land, unlike their deceased forefathers who freely donated the land to the missionaries for church developments.

Rev. Dr. Christopher Yiki, the Estates Officer for Madi and West Nile diocese explains that the land wrangles and litigations involving the church institutions and members of the community have greatly affected developments in the diocese. He says the Estates department has embarked on a drive to fast-track the various court proceedings regarding diocesan land to end the wrangles.

While celebrating his 7th year of service as bishop of Madi and West Nile diocese last week, Rt. Rev. Charles Collins Andaku, identified land wrangles as one of the challenges affecting the development plans and the spread of the gospel in the diocese.

Bishop Andaku said the diocese has so far secured land titles for 79 churches over the past seven years.

Madi and West Nile Diocese is the largest diocese of the 37 dioceses of the Province of Church of Uganda which was curved out of Northern Uganda Diocese in 1969.

The Diocese boasts 12 archdeaconries, 150 parishes, 719 churches, and over 800,000 Christians according to information obtained from Madi and West Nile Diocese.
