There is a disagreement between land lords and Kabale Municipality council authorities over property tax and ground rates.

The land lords accuse the municipality of doubling the property tax and ground rates in August this year without any explanation.

Kabale Municipality has directed the land lords to clear the taxes by December or else risk closure of their premises. George Barintuma, one of the concerned landlords, says the decision by the council to hike the property tax and ground rates is totally unacceptable.

According to Barintuma, the tax increment will prompt them to hike rent to the detriment of their tenants. Leopold Twesigye, another concerned landlord says he has been happily paying Shillings eighty thousand in ground and property rates in the last five years.

Twesigye says he was dismayed in August this year when council asked him to pay over million Shillings before December this year. According to Twesigye, he can't afford the fee because he has other tax obligations.

Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha, the Mayor Kabale Municipality says his office is aware that landlords are unhappy with the revised property tax and ground rates. He however, says the property tax and ground rates were increased by Government valuers.

Byamugisha says they have resolved that land lords pay up as council explores possible solutions to the problem.
