LC 1 Chairperson, 4 Others Detained for Coordinating Cattle Raids in Katakwi

Five people including a village chairperson are in custody at Katakwi police station on accusations of collaborating with rustlers to raid livestock in Katakwi and neighbouring Karamoja districts.   

The five were picked up Wednesday from Ajeluk Village, Olela Parish, Katakwi Sub County, and Ngariam County in Katakwi district in an operation led by the Resident District Commissioner, John Steven Ekoom. 

According to Ekoom, they received intelligence indicating that the suspects were coordinating cattle rustling operations targeting one of the homes he didn’t disclose.

He says that they also recovered 69 head of cattle from the same village in kraals built in shrubs, which are now at Olilim holding ground pending verification.

The escalation of cattle thefts in Katakwi by suspected Karimojong warriors has attracted the attention of the Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister, Jacob Oboth – Oboth. 

He visited the district on Monday says the rustling collaborators will be charged with two cases of murder.

Some of the sub-counties affected by the increased case of cattle thefts are Ngariam, Palam, Magoro, Okore and Guyaguya among others.
