Lightning Kills Bugiri Teacher

Benedicto Omoding, a P.4 teacher died on Wednesday night yesterday, while closing the classroom following the heavy rains that lasted eight hours.
A teacher at Kimbale Primary School in Bugiri District has been struck by lightning.

Benedicto Omoding, a P.4 teacher died on Wednesday night yesterday, while closing the classroom following the heavy rains that lasted eight hours.

Mariam Nanteza, a P.3 teacher says that she saw Omoding falling down and thought that he had slid because of the slippery floor.

“I saw Omoding falling down but I did not pay much attention because many of us including pupils slide due to the nature of our classroom floor which gets slippery during rainy season,” Nanteza says.

According to Nanteza Omoding was rushed to Nankoma health center IV, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Michael Oketcho, the head teacher says that the copper wires meant to facilitate the functionality of the school's lightning conductor were stolen and have never been replaced.

“Following the persistent rains, we contacted a technician in March this year who examined our lightning conductor and notified us that it was non-functional because the copper wires were stolen which leaves us without protection in case lightning strikes the school,” Oketcho says.

Oketcho want the Ministry of Education to provide free lightning conductors to schools, which will protect pupils and teachers.
