Lira Bans Night Movement of Livestock

Lira district security authorities have banned night movement of livestock.

George Obia, the Lira District Police Commander says that the ban is to reduce on the increasing theft of livestock.

Obia said the district has recorded an increase in cases of theft of livestock in the recent months.

According to Obia, all animal traders are required to only transport their livestock between 7 am and 6 pm.

Obia said all animals found being transported at night shall be impounded and verified before being released to the owner.

Marino Ogang, the LCIII chairperson of Agweng Sub County in Lira district welcomed the guidelines saying that they will reduce on livestock thefts in the area.

He also says that no LCI chairperson is allowed to issue out village livestock movement permits to anybody without the presence or physically seeing the animal.

Joseph Okello, a resident of Ojwina Division in Lira town says the guidelines should not be implemented only during the festive season but also throughout the year.
