Lira Diocese is looking for 1.5billion shillings to construct a magnificent and modern house for the Bishop as his resident.

The money is expected to come through donations from the Christian community and well-wishers just like it was the case during the renovation and expansion of the cathedral.

The magnificent house that the diocese wants to construct for the Bishop will have a mission hall, visitor's accommodation rooms, meeting rooms, parking yard, sauna, and a swimming pool among others. The construction is expected to start in June this year 2022.

Fr Emmanuel Opio the chancellor and the chairperson Central Organizing Committee for the project explained that the Bishop’s house is the face of the Diocese which should speak volume and fit the status.

He, however, cautioned the Christians to be vigilant especially now that fraudsters may use the opportunity to extort money from them in the name of gathering resources for the church.

But His Lordship Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok explained that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had pledged a total of 400m shillings to begin the work although the money has not been sent.   He is optimistic that the pledge will be delivered and it will save the Christians from the burden of contributing more money. He added that over 100m has already been collected by the Christians.

In Minakulu Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr Douglas Owera, the Parish Priest says Christians are positively contributing towards the project. He however, could not disclose the amount they have so far collected.

Meanwhile Pabious Otike, a Christian of Lira Cathedral believes that it is the responsibility of the entire Christian community to ensure that the Bishop has a decent house thus the need for everyone to contribute.

Whereas Joyce Odongo a Christian at Lira Cathedral Parish said Christians need to be reminded most times about the collection since their contributions towards the project are still small.

Constructed in 1964 when Lira catholic parish became a diocese, the current residence has outlived its lifespan by 20 years. It is not self-contained, neither is it big enough to host for large meetings, or accommodate visitors.
