Lira University Seeks Gov't Support to Establish Faculty of Agriculture

Speaking at the second graduation ceremony on Friday, Justice Benjamin Odoki, the Chancellor said that the university had adequate land which needs to be utilized with support from the government.

Lira University has called on the government to establish a faculty of Agriculture at the new university.

The university started as a Constituent College of Gulu University in 2009. It later attained autonomy as a fully-fledged Public University in 2015.

Speaking at the second graduation ceremony on Friday, Justice Benjamin Odoki, the Chancellor said that the university has adequate land of more than 300 hectares which needs to be utilized with support from the government.

Justice Odoki said that the establishment of a faculty of Agriculture will champion research and agro- industrialization.

He also said that there are plans of establishing a business incubation centre at the university to promote innovation and enterprise.

While officiating at the ceremony virtually from the State House, the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni said that government will look into the request. She applauded the University for promoting the development of human capital in the region. She also promised to address the issue of staff salary.

“I’m happy that you have concentrated largely on science and technology courses but I wish to encourage you to also train students on business-oriented programs to address the challenge of job scarcity in the country.” She said.

GraceFreedom Kwiyucwiny, the Minister of State for Northern Uganda re-echoed the need to have the faculty of Agriculture which will help transform the Lango Sub-region and Northern Uganda into a food basket.

Professor Jasper Ogwal Okeng, the Vice-Chancellor said that although the university was established to specifically train students on science-based disciplines, the university council resolved to offer business and management courses.
