Local Governments Minister, Tom Butime has tasked district chairpersons and Chief Administrative Officers to draft strategic development plans that will help them earn more revenue to supplement the provisional funds from central government.

He was speaking at the closure of the third Local Economic Development Conference (LED) held in Jinja district on Tuesday. The Minister asked the local leaders to develop alternative plans of supplementing the funds they receive from government so as to extend social services to their communities.

LED is organized by Uganda local government association (ULGA) annually with the aim of increasing the tax base in districts by empowering leaders on how to improve productivity through agriculture, tourism and partnering with the private sector.

Butime says there is need for the leaders to map out their investment plans and engage all stake holders for their implementation.

On his part, the ULGA president, and Lwengo LC V Chairperson, George Mutabazi, said local governments should have alternative ways of raising revenue rather than relying on the central government for support at all times.

Mutabazi stressed that local leaders should look beyond their political term of office and think of empowering their communities.
