Hajji Ahmed Nyago, the UMSC Electoral Commission Chairperson who oversaw the nomination exercise, thanked the Muslims for being peaceful and supportive to the care taker Kadhi and his team during the tough times after the death of their former Kadhi.
Muslims in
Lwengo district are preparing to receive a new Kadhi, URN has learnt. The new
Kadhi will replace the former Kadhi, Sheikh Juma Muwesi who died last year.
Sheikh
Abdullah Juko, the Chairperson Lwengo Muslim District Council told Muslims
shortly after Friday prayers that they have nominated two candidates and
submitted their names to Uganda Muslim Supreme Council for consideration.
The candidates
are Sheikh Umar Kigongo and Sheikh Ismail Kibuule who has been acting Kadhi.
Upon receiving the names of the candidates, the UMSC Electoral Commission is
expected to scrutinize the academic qualifications of the candidates.
They will
also be required to seat both oral and written interviews before their names
are submitted to the college of Sheikhs for vetting before a final decision is
made and announced by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.
Article 19 (5)
of the UMSC constitution provides the qualifications of the Kadhi. It states
that the Kadhi shall be at
least 30 years old but not more than 70 years, a holder of at least a senior
six also known as Thanawi Certificate in Islamic studies from a recognized
Islamic Institution of learning with at least a five years working experience
in Islamic affairs or a person who has accumulated knowledge and experience
which is considered adequate by the college of Sheikhs.
It
also provides that a Kadhi shall be a respectable, married and good practicing
Sunni Muslim, free from offences under the National and Islamic laws and capable
of reading and writing at least English, Luganda, Arabic or Swahili.
Sheikh Abdullah Juko, the
Chairperson Lwengo Muslim District Council, says despite the fact that Lwengo
Muslim community is comprised of Muslims from different factions, they are
united and pay allegiance to the UMSC leadership under Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan
Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda.

to remain calm as they wait for the process of appointing the new Kadhi.

Sheikh Umar Kigongo, the caretaker Kadhi thanked
leaders at various levels for helping him in his leadership, adding that he is
working tirelessly to ensure that the Muslim community gets more development
projects and improve the livelihoods of Muslim families in the district.
Muslims
faithful in Lwengo have welcomed the development, saying they will be happy to
get a fully constituted council with a Kadhi to run Muslim projects.
